Academy Art Center, Honolulu, HI, in conjunction with the Textile Society of Americaʼs 2008
International Symposium

A curatorial project exploring contemporary fiber a vehicle for articulating and “mending” cultural narratives dismissed by dominant ideologies. With the generous design support of Scott Groeniger and Kirsten Simonsen, and a group of local textile artists, we produced and distributed over 300 CD catalogues in hand-made jackets.

Dried and handstitched “By the Wind Sailor” jellyfish (Velella velella), invisible thread. 2008 Velella velella travel together as large communities on the open sea, occasionally gracing ocean shores. Orientation of their “sails” determines their destination. We too, float through life as interconnected clusters of communities, our ultimate direction modified by both known and imperceptible variables in our greater environment.

Hand-embroidered antique wedding dress, plastic wedding rings. 2005
Questions the incongruent role anti-samesex marriage dogma played during a wartime election, particularly in light of divorce statistics in “red” states.
Bodice text: For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of
God in heaven Matthew 22:29-31
Skirt text: I am thinking of getting married. Why does that make you feel nervous?
Inner skirt text: I am thinking of not getting married. Why does that make you feel nervous?
Veil text: Practicing the Immeasurable Mind of Love extinguishes anger in the hearts of living beings.
Practicing the Immeasurable Mind of Compassion extinguishes all sorrows and anxieties…
(Nagarjuna, a second century Buddhist philosopher)

The Salvaged Net Series is an ongoing body of large scale non-traditional tapestries created from discarded gillnets collected by the Columbia River Fishermanʼs Projective Union where the Columbia meets the Pacific, and of nets and ropes collected from the Pacific shorelines of Oahu. The series explores the Oceanic concept of water as a means of connection, and the possibility of reclamation through re-embracing of “old” technologies and thought systems considered to be useless and obsolete.
